Hello and welcome to WA Chess Queens. I've set this community up to support women chess players in our city who feel that a unique space is necessary to discuss chess, organise social events and meetings. The reason being is that the majority, and I mean the overwhelming majority of chess players in Perth Chess Clubs are men. I know it isn't there fault, but all things being fair, there should be a space for women's players to rally their spirits and rejuvenate a game which should by no means be gender biased.
This isn't a cub at the moment, just a place to discuss Chess, including tournaments, games and general business about the Women's Chess scene and how it is organised. I love chess, and you'll find me at the Metro Chess Club, I recently decided to join a club to find some good games. I'm sure I will find them too! Unfortunately though, I feel a little isolated being the only woman at the club.
WA chess queens is not just about chess play, it is about chess image, promoting chess for girls and young women as something more than a male dominated competitive arena. Inspired by Alexandra Kosteniuk and her motto 'chess is cool', I think if is going to work at all, there needs to be support for those women who want to play.
This space will be filled with information about local chess, particular relating to women's events, games, discussions, and of course news from the Women's Qorld championship level where chess is both brilliant and beautiful at the moment. If you've had an interest in chess, or would have liked to have joined a club, but were intimidated by the gender imbalance, there may be a solution here at WA Chess Queens.
It is more than just chess to talk about, since we are a part of a social phenomenom, we can talk about how being a women's chess player affects each of us, and what it means to overcome the obstacles of the past to compete at high levels. The aim is to achieve a balance and high level of satisfaction for gameplay, analysis and social participation.
